In our lower grades, Kualapuu School implements Success For All reading programs. In Grade PreK and Kindergarten these are all day programs that integrate literacy skills through various themes throughout the year. Students develop early reading skills and are reading by the middle of Kindergarten. In first grade, students continue to develop their phonics skills and move from beginning phonics to advanced.

In Grades 2-6 for reading and all grade for writing Kualapuu has partnered with Columbia University to implement the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project Units of Study. Otherwise known as “Reading / Writing Workshop,” students hone their reading and writing skills through developing their joy in reading and writing. Classroom environments are cultivated to nurture students as lifelong readers and writers are given a choice about which books they read and which topics they write about. Teachers instruct students to hone their reading and writing skills through a series of specific mini-lessons each day that target specific literacy skills. Each classroom is equipped with a full classroom library of all levels of high-interest books so all students can highly engage with literacy on a daily basis. Lessons are focused on targeted mini-lessons, students sharing, and students building their reading stamina – good readers read a lot!

Kualapuu School uses Achieve 3000, a technology-based literacy curriculum, to further support students in developing advanced comprehension skills. Fluency skills are also further developed using the Read Live program. Both programs can be used at home through internet access. Achieve 3000 can be used off line on an iPad. Please inquire with your child’s teacher or Vice Principal Loretta Labrador (loretta@kaulapuu.k12.hi.us) for more information about using these programs at home.

More Information:
